How To Save Money on Petrol and Diesel
'Saving petrol' (or diesel), is fast becoming a buzzword as fuel prices continue to soar. Many people are selling their thirsty 4x4 in favour of a smaller car, but there are many things you can do with your current car to save fuel and therefore money. Here are some easy tips for you to try:
Here are some easy tips for you to try:
- Drive in a consistent, smooth way - if you constantly push your foot right down on the accelerator, you put larger amounts of fuel into the engine. It's better to build up speed gradually.
- Having windows open, particularly at high speeds, uses more fuel than having them closed, because when open, there is a greater drag factor and the engine has to compensate by using more fuel.
- Keep your tyres pumped up to their recommended pressure - look in your vehicle's manual for the correct pressure levels. Slacker tyres means more road resistance which increases fuel consumption.
- Try to reduce the overall weight in your car - any excess weight will require a higher consumption of fuel
- Do as many tasks in one go as possible - if you're going to another town to shop, make a list of all the things you can do while you're there or en route. Making a lot of short local trips is much less fuel efficient than one long journey.
- Many cars have air conditioning fitted as standard these days, but not everybody knows that it uses significant amounts of fuel whenever you use it. If you can bear to travel without it on, (depending on how hot the weather is), then do so, as it really will reduce your fuel bill.
- Use discount cards, codes and coupons - just google using phrases like 'petrol coupons', 'petrol discounts' and see what offers are available.
